Subverting the idea of inside and out is a longstanding tenet of Comme des Garcons design. It's a way to flip a person's expectations of what's the right side and what's the wrong side as well as a way to expose the high level of construction that is usually tucked away. It celebrates the intricacies and geometries of a garment's 'guts'--the linings of tailored jackets that when turned inside out float softly off the body, the unique curved panels of facings, or welt pockets that cut across fabric transitions, graphically bridging them as a sort of fabric collage. This is evident across the entire Comme des Garcons universe and timeline. In Spring/Summer 1999, tailored jackets with frill half-lining appeared on the Comme des Garcons Homme Plus runway. Fast forward to the present day and the AW20 show styled models in inside-out blazers with graphic star-printed lining.

This blazer is from Junya Watanabe's AW19 women's show, which emphasized the possibility of dual/layered garments using graphic contrast lining and reversibility. Bombers feature extended knee-length silk lining that when reversed makes the garment appear as a coat while the coats themselves are cut with tiered ruffled lining that peeks out underneath them. This oversized wool flannel blazer features two different graphic printed silks as lining and double-sided buttons as the front closure to make the jacket truly reversible. The neck tag is sewn on the plain black wool flannel side, a subtle suggestion to the wearer to not take the expected for granted.
