Utility vests, holsters, chest rigs, and body armor vests rendered in traditional menswear materials featured heavily on the runway for Junya Watanabe's Spring/Summer 2019. This one from look 8 demonstrates the designer's expertise in utilizing historical men's uniforms as a basis for their work and elevating them with new, luxurious fabrics, trims, and construction. It is based on military surplus load bearing vests, keeping the dense array of 3D pockets and molle webbing on the back panel but updating the materials using luxurious wool glen check backed with black nylon ripstop. The front bodice is cut curved and shaped 3 dimensionally around the torso, letting the pockets fall not only on the front but along the sides of the wearer. The black velcro flap closures are cut oversize, leaving a graphic visual impression in contrast to the grey while the body-facing side is cut in full woodland camouflage. F
