Spring/Summer 2020 drew from jockey uniforms, with their bright colors and bold, geometric graphics. Pieces like the Ansel and Espinoza Racing Jacket are a direct translation from racetrack to runway but this Tulcea Blouson captures the graphic impression of the jockey silk in a subtler, more nuanced way. In lieu of contrast colors, the Tulcea Blouson’s geometric and tiered look is achieved by contrasting bias cut and straight grain cut fabric to create a picture frame-esque composition on the front body. The shoulder gussets that wrap from back to front cast subtle shadows that reinforce the 3 dimensional layered quality of the piece. Subtle contrast pops on the front when the gusset panels and on the sides where inset pockets are cut with graphic oval openings. The jacket is finished with center front zip, convertible collar with neck latch, and snap button cuffs. All in a custom diamond check that mixes purple, yellow, and grey-greens for a warm houndstooth-esque effect. This deceptively simple piece of outerwear reveals a wealth of artfulness and technical prowess upon closer inspection.
