Vetements Spring 2019 centered around Demna Gvasalia's past and the Georgian civil war that he and his family escaped from. It was a collection exploring his own history and past trauma, with a large focus placed on how violence and conflict permeated everyday life. Rampant gunfire was reflected in bullet-hole riddled hoodies and tees, and layered sweatpants-under-cargo pants representative of his neighbors, ordinary men, being drafted to fight in the military. The trousers here reflect the the way the war and ordinary life collided--a regular pair of jeans is recut and sewn atop a cargo pant base. Edges are left raw and feature gaps that show peeks of camouflage. Looking closer (and at the interior), the construction is surprisingly complex. The camouflage fabric is cut to align with a reinforced seat and knees, as well as along the outseam. Some denim panels are sewn regularly while others are grafted atop the camouflage base with topstitching. This all belies an amazing amount of care and consideration put into what could be considered a simple pair of cargo pants.
