A new form introduced for Spring/Summer 2020, the J84-S forgoes the traditional Acronym design language of intense articulation and over-engineered cargo pockets, instead opting for something subtler and quieter with the interest coming from the artistically sculpted peripherals. The body is cut on an oversize fit block instead of the usual KG, yielding a more relaxed, organic silhouette that fits like a shroud around its wearer. The central detail is said to be the hood, which pays homage to samurai Kabuto helmets with its 360 degree brim and layered neck flap that acts as the attachment point at the convertible latch collar, but the primary detail that stands out to us is the tensionzip opening at the two waist pockets. Watertight aquaguard YKK zippers are folded back on themselves, the inherent stiffness of the laminated tape 'popping' the pockets open automatically upon unzipping. That expansion is the functional goal of the 'tensionzip' detail but the zipper's structure also pushes the face fabric away from the inner pocket bag, at times creating the illusion that what lies inside these oblong teardrop shaped openings are infinite dark voids. It's a dramatic visual effect achieved as a byproduct of optimizing function and ergonomics, one that also reflects a sort of raw minimalism in using the material conditions of the zipper itself only.
The jacket is finished with other Acronym specific features like 360 degree velcro wrist closure, a darted left chest pocket accessed from the jacket interior, jacketsling, bilateral pocketbags at the waist, and layered shockcord hem. The CF zipper closure has both rows of teeth facing wearer's right, which makes the track stand perpendicular to the body when zipped, allowing for a smooth transition into the collar closure.
