Though from the same design family as the iconic Helmut Lang Astro biker coat, this incredibly rare M51-style iteration is unique in almost every regard. The coat substitutes the usual ballistic nylon or resinated cotton for a polyurethane coated cotton/polyamide that has a smooth, luxurious hand and fluid drape. The patinated dusty brown-grey color adds to this combination of luxury, utility, and antiquity, bringing an amazing amount of texture and depth to what could otherwise be a flat-looking synthetic textile. The interior finishing is different as well, with the coat being fully lined in a deep black wool/alpaca blend. Finally, a removable raccoon fur trim sits at the collar in lieu of the faux fur used on the 1999 astros.
Materials aside, the formal design differences are noticeable as well. The M51-style flap waist pockets help break up the coat visually, adding a sense of proportion and utility. The bicep panel on the sleeve, usually visually dense with parallel quilt-stitching is left clean. All of these differences create a wholly different atmosphere, one that reads as refined, even more minimalist, and timeless.
Finished with center front zipper with button-closed placket, double latch velcro neck closure, and single interior pocket. The waistline is adjustable as well, with two channels for two ways of altering the silhouette. There's the string tie that's routed all the way around and also a snap-fastened belt that's threaded along just the back.
Made in Italy 8.5/10 Condition, with no rips or tears. Slight discoloration at the back which is pictured. May come out with a dry-clean. Interior lining is in perfect condition.
Fit Notes: Though it is tagged quite large at a 54, I've found wearing it roomy as a medium to be entirely possible. Would also suit an L or XL well.
