In reference to Victorian traditional dress, Soshiotsuki has made this double-breasted frock coat in heavyweight melton. Its historical inspiration yields a severe, challenging sense of formality and antiquity but Soshi is able to bring an air of modernity with subtle, yet impactful shifts in tailoring. Exaggeratedly wide peak lapels and low-set double-breasted closure echo 80s power dressing while hints of an embroidered tailor tag demarcate modern creation. The seasonal-signature exposed inner lining is Soshi's own move, cutting in a flash of textural contrast and clean, contemporary detailing, but also reinforcing a sense of poetic vulnerability, a symbolic gesture of turning the interior self out. The coat combines multiple forms of menswear across an expansive timeline, invoking the archetypes of men that wore them and offering the wearer an opportunity to inhabit these different historical realities. It ties into the collection's meditation on contemporary masculinity and coming-of-age perfectly.
