Takahiro Miyashita's label is named 'the soloist' in reference to his desire to be the sole creative force in control, but one of many latent themes in the work released under The Soloist is one of the 'double,' the 'two,' or the 'duality.' From the fully reversible construction of the early cowboy shirts to the double-sided 'Poker Face' Jacket to collaborations with Syn Murayama (known for 'Twoness,' in which he literally reconstructs iconic cultural forms like baseball caps, Nike Swooshes and vintage military parkas), Takahiro has embraced the idea of duality in his work as a driver of design decisions and as a rumination on the multiplicity of our personal identity. This macintosh coat is a clear manifestation of the theme, incorporating two different alternating face fabrics across the body in a subtle navy-black colorway. The black wool/linen blend and navy 100% cotton fabric mix across a wool/angora lining, never actually sewn to each other as they're simply stitched onto the lining instead (quite the marvel in terms of construction). At each faux-seam there is no connection but only the noisy fray of raw edges that part ways to a sliver of the wool/angora body inside.

The waist pockets also feature a doubling effect, with silk-trimmed patch pockets half-hiding slash side entry pockets. Not only does the system of nested pockets adhere to the thematic story of the piece, it also adds some welcome utility as a way to divide the belongings stashed in the coat. Burrowing deeper on the left side, one discovers that a coin pocket is also stitched in and, furthermore, that the outermost patch pocket is actually mirrored onto the left back of the coat in yet another thematic double.

This coat truly is a feat of construction. It's crafted in the finest materials that are both luxurious and wearable, put together in such a unique way, and loaded with intricate details. Cut sharp but comfortable, it really is a pleasure to wear.
