Dark and romantic, this dramatic chester by takahiromiyashita The Soloist illustrates the brand's surprising degree of versatility. One would think that Takahiro's work with soloist is so idiosyncratic, so considered, so jam-packed with wildly imaginative details that its wearers would have no choice but to style it within its own aesthetic. However, and maybe somewhat ironically, the collision of various different influences is exactly what makes Soloist pieces so versatile. Each piece seems to sit in multiple different aesthetic spaces, a quality introduced by the breadth of characters that its details, materials, and forms pull from.
This coat manifests as a formal chester with its usual accoutrements: bold lapels, sharp cut, chest and waist flap pockets. However, the way Takahiro Miyashita affects the traditional elements of a chester coat opens this piece up to being worn in different ways. Tattered and extended/exposed sleeve lining, an unbalanced double back vent, and a mixture of finished and raw seams all add an element of roughness that allows the wearer to style such a formal piece in a grungier look (Think mudwash denim from Takahiro's former project Number (N)ine or Greg Lauren's vintage patchwork). In addition, there are bondage straps on the triceps and back, a diagonal cross-body strap, and 4 star 'conches' adorning the flap waist pockets to add elements of visual noise. The silver leather-tasseled star badges and silver d-rings securing the straps bring a lightness that punctuates the heavy black coat and introduces yet another character within the piece. These details throw it in perfect alignment with the bondage detailing of Helmut Lang, the decadent rockstar textures of Saint Laurent and more.
When one investigates this piece, it really seems as though it bears the markings of a wealth of different imagined previous wearers--all having worn and passed on the coat with their own little adornments. Having said such, this coat truly presents a perfect synthesis of high and low, rough and glamorous, executed as effortlessly as ever. A piece that is waiting for you, the wearer, to style it in your own idiosyncratic way and add your own character to the storied history it seems to present.
